While driving around the home of Dollywood can be maddening, especially in a large rig, we discovered that bicycle travel in Pigeon Forge, TN is delightful, once you find the right places to go. Specifically, we were able to find Patriot Park, a small city park dedicated to the brave men and women who served in the military, and encircled by a fun paved path. The park is adjacent to the picturesque old mill area. The mill dates from 1830 and still turns, although the area is now home to shops and upscale eating places, including one that featured outdoor dining and delicious southern dishes. A few blocks further on is the 4-mile long Greenway trail, a paved hiking and biking path that runs alongside picturesque Little Pigeon Creek, with its assortment of delightful waterfowl.
We rode to lunch one day, found the trail, then returned the following morning to ride a little further. As you can see, it is well worth a repeat visit, and makes out list of the top bicycle trails along our journeys.
And yes, before anyone asks, Ellen did wear a helmet.
The 190-year-old mill is very charming. Just needs some WD-40. Shrimp and grits. Every place makes it differently, but never had one we didn’t like. Want fancy southern cooking? How about jalapeno corn pudding and maple pecan pork chop. Outstanding! The Patriot missile centerpiece of Patriot park, with tributes to all branches of the military. And also a tribute to first responders. The Greenway trail is gorgeous. Water reflections were wonderful in the early morning. We were constantly entertained by mallard ducks, Canadian geese, and these snow geese. Some of whom wandered across the trail, quite unafraid of humans.
